In 2012-13, Kobe Bryant’s team , the Lakers who were favored to challenge the Heat for the NBA title suffered a dreadful season , barely made the playoffs and were swept by the San Antonio Spurs. Late in the regular season , Kobe suffered a season ending injury and , at the age of 35 , there are doubts that he will be the same when he returns . Now comes the news that he has taken his mother to court for selling his memorabilia which she had stored for him.
It didn’t seem that things could get worse but they just did.
Reading the flurry of allegations and counter-allegations, it is difficult to know who’s in the right . His mother claims that she had stored them in a New Jersey locker ( rental fees $ 1,500 / month ) after several years of having them in her house. It is claimed that Kobe told her that he had no interest in them and that’s why she felt free to do with them as she wished. Only then, did she arrange with a sports memorabilia firm to auction them off. That’s what she says . Unnamed sources tell another story. They say Kobe had offered her $ 250,000 towards a new house in Nevada that she wanted but that she wanted him to buy it for her outright. (This, by the way , is a second home , an extra home) . When he refused , the story goes , she decided to sell his stuff. So far , she has given Goldin Auctions LLC between 70-100 items to be auctioned of and has another 900 items in her possession for future assignment. In the coming days , more details will come out but , based on what has been published so far , my sympathies are with Kobe , and not because he’s my favorite player.
The items in dispute include uniforms and gear from his high school and NBA days, , autographed game balls , trophies , a 1998 All-Star Ring and the 2000 NBA championship ring. . The uniforms and other bric-à-brac might not mean much but the Championship rings are a part of him . He paid for them with thousands of hours on the practice court , years of sacrificing his body in NBA wars . There is no way he would have given them away.I think that Kobe was extremely careless in not having taken possession of them , but I cannot believe he them to his mom. For all those Kobe haters who write in to say that he is an ungrateful brat and that he should give his mom whatever she wants, I have a question: What kind of mother sells off pieces of her son’s life to buy herself a second home ? And this , when he has already been very generous to her and his father ?
Unfortunately , this sordid drama will not be resolved quietly or soon ; it will play itself out in the courts over many months. No matter how it comes out , Kobe will be a loser in the court of public opinion . Already one Kobe hater has written in to crow ” Now , Kobe knows what it is like to be raped . ” I hope the judge who hears this case comes up with a Solomonic decision : ” Kobe, you shouldn’t have left your stuff with your Mom all these years . Pay her the storage fees ( plus interest) . You then have one week to get your stuff out of there . As for the auction house , they should have verified that Mrs. Bryant had title to these artifiacts before they signed a deal for them . They are not owed a thing . Case Closed .”
