If one is to go by the news media’s comments , Beyonce’s halftime show was a slam dunk . The New York Times , for instance , offered a detailed assessment of her performance and was all praise for it . So did most of the other newspapers and celebrity commenters . However , if one is to read the comments from ordinary joes , they were almost universally critical . Some of them said the lyrics were incomprehensible while others said that Beyonce lipsynced them and that the whole performance was vulgar and not suitable for family watching . I tend to agree with them . I like Beyonce . She is beautiful , she is talented , she was energetic and I couldn’t care less if she lip synced the vocals . It’s just that this type of frenetic performance , with its pyrotechnics and its spastic moves , has become old hat and it detracts from the main event, the game . As one commenter said “Her music not my style so I muted it! Of course I do that every Super Bowl. I watch it for the football- If I want to watch a concert I’ll go to one!” I couldn’t agree more. I realize that the halftime show and the ads are meant to make the Superbowl interesting to everyone ,not just the men, but I think entirely too much is made of them . If the entire halftime period was spent with talking heads discussing the first half and predicting what will happen in the second half , you’d have no complaints from this football fan .
As far as the ads were concerned , I thought they were not as good as in the past . I might have put this down to my becoming jaded , except that many people seem to share my opinion . By far the worst ad was the one for Go Daddy . That kiss was disgusting , it was cringe-inducing, and it seemed to go on forever. ( This is a man’s opinion ; I imagine the women and kids must have hated it even more). Ads are concerned successful if they stay in the public mind and , from that point of view , this ad was very successful because it certainly caused a lot of buzz. Whether it will result in more business for Go Daddy is another matter.
This is how I rated the Super Bowl ads ( 5= Best , 0= worst).
5. …. Tide . ( Funny , clever , good punchline . But will viewers remember that it was a commercial for Tide ?)
4…. Budweiser . ( A Clydesdale remembers. Sentimental , effective )
Taco Bell . ( Grandpa goes wild)
Audi ( The Prom)
3…. Coca Cola ( The Mirage).
Dodge Ram ( Salute to The Farmers)
Mercedes ( Willem Dafoe sells his soul for a Mercedes , almost)
Doritos ( Goat for Sale)
Go Daddy ( Your Big Idea)
Century 21 ( Smarter. Bolder. Faster)
Subway ( Losing it )
Jeep ( Whole Again )
M & M’s
Toyota ( Wish Granted)
2…. Best Buy ( Ask Amy. Amy Poehler is so annoying )
Milk ( The Rock)
Hyundai ( The Bullied Kid)
Pepsi Next ( The Party )
Volkswagen ( Get in , get happy . Not racist , just stupid)
Doritos ( Daddy fashionistas)
Kia ( Respect the tech)
Soda stream ( Discarded soda bottles)
Taco Bell ( Grande papi)
Subway ( Februany)
Carl’s Jr and Hardees ( Sun tan model)
Budweiser Black Crown
Hyundai ( Playdate with the Flaming Lips)
1….Speedstick ( Unattended Laundry)
Wonderful Pistachios ( Gagnam Style)
Oreo ( Cream or cookie)
0….Gildan ( Favorite T-shirt)
Go Daddy ( Smart meets Sexy)
I might have missed a couple but I think that is most of them . One thing I dislike ( other than crassness ) is ads which show places getting trashed . The Oreo’s commercial was one such, as a library got demolished as people debated the merits of cookies or cream. I find this distasteful just as I do the new ” tradition ” of smearing a wedding cake on the new bride’s face . Not funny at all.
