I can just imagine the conversation between the Harbaugh brothers when they met for the ritual handshake after the Super Bowl game had ended .
Jim ( 49ers) : “Congrats , bro . You know you guys were lucky , don’t you ?
John ( Ravens ) : “Thanks .. but look who’s talking ! If it wasn’t for the power outage we ‘d have won by more than 20 .”
Jim : “Oh , yeah ? If it wasn’t for the referee swallowing his whistle when your DB mugged Crabtree in the end zone , you’d be the one congratulating me now .”
John : ” Oh ! So now you’re gonna blame the referees ? We beat you fair and square, and you know it .”
Jim : We’ll be back again at the Big Dance next year and we’ll do this again next year … if you make it that far . See ya .”
It was a very strange game wasn’t it ? The way it started with Flacco marching the Ravens up the field for an early TD and then building a 15 point lead by halftime , SuperBowl XLVII had all the earmarks of a blowout . The feeling became stronger when Jacoby Jones took the opening kickoff of the second half for a spectacular 109 yard ( 108 according to the NFL) return TD to put Baltimore ahead by 22. And then came the power outage which changed everything .
The game has been discussed ad infinitum on ESPN and the other channels and I’m not going to rehash it all over again . What follows is my take on a few aspects of the game :
I’m not one of those who thinks the outage caused the Ravens to lose focus , and nearly resulted in a San Francisco win . The 49ers are a slow starting team and Kaepernick was nervous at the start of the game . I think that when they 49ers scored that first TD after the outage , it gave them confidence and they began playing to their abilities . Conversely , the Ravens began to lose confidence as the 49ers ran wild in racking up 17 unanswered points .It is to the Ravens’ credit that they were able to re-group and deny San Francisco the go-ahead TD. In this they were helped by some inexplicable playcalling by the 49ers. Why , with the Ravens missing lineman Haloti Ngata , with a monster offensive line of their own and a veteran RB in Frank Gore , didn’t Niners try to punch the ball in ? Why did they try three successive passes so close to the goal line ?, We’ll never know .
I don’t accept that the refereeing cost the 49ers the game . It appeared to me a) that the ball was uncatchable and b)referees are well known for their reluctance , late in the game , to make a call that would decide the outcome.Besides ,the bad calls evened out over the course of the game . Jim Harbaugh has nothing to moan about.
I was rooting for the Ravens , not because I like them so much ( I particularly dislike Ray Lewis ) but because I can’t stand Jim Harbaugh . He is classless and a bigmouth . I like many of the 49ers including Kaepernick , Frank Gore and Vernon Davis but not enough to overcome my apathy for their coach. As for the Ravens , I’m happy for Joe Flacco ( a real Cinderella story, this 6th round pick from Delaware) , Ed Reed and John Harbaugh, and I’m happy we have seen the last of Ray Lewis . I’m tired of his sanctimonious s— t.
This was one of the better SuperBowls but I’m not ready to call it the best ever , as some are doing . It’s good that it was competitive, as recent SuperBowls have been . There was a time a few years ago when the SuperBowls were dull , onesided matchups decided well before the final whistle . This one kept us all interested to the end.
