Two days after the N.Y Giants debacle in the Meadowlands , I still cannot believe how it happened . This is not the first time the Eagles have dashed Giant hopes with last second heroics but it has got to be the most devastating. It was particularly bad because the way the Giants’ dominated the first half gave no clue to what was in store . I had a bad feeling when Mario Manningham got careless and fumbled with the ball to give the Eagles an easy TD. Even so , when the Giants were leading by 21 points midway through the fourth quarter( the fourth quarter!) I was not seriously worried. What followed was a train wreck as whatever could go wrong, did . Matt Dodge must have suffered a brain freeze , punting the ball to the ever – dangerous DeSean Jackson instead of kicking it safely out-of-bounds. Still , had he done what he was supposed to , the way things were going , the Eagles would have probably won in OT.
I only hope that the team is able to recover in time to beat the Packers on their home field . The Packers too are fighting for their playoff lives and will be a formidable opponent at home . They played Sunday in a tough loss to the New England Patriots , probably the best team in the league . Aaron Rodgers was sharp and the defense was awesome . Still, the Giants have been in similar situations before and I hope they can pull off the victory.
In the aftermath of the Giants loss , Coughlin’s coaching future with the Giants seems to be in some question. Before their second half collapse , the Giants had been playing exceedingly well and it is unfair to blame the coach for the loss. However , that’s life . When things go well , the coach gets some of the credit ; when things go badly , he gets most of the blame . Besides , it is easier to replace the coaching staff , rather than make wholesale changes of the players. Coughlin is a good coach , well-regarded around the league , but his spot became tenuous the moment Bill Cowher threw his hat into the ring.Prior to the Giants Super Bowl victory in 2007 , Coughlin had been on the hot seat and , had it not been for that triumph , he might have been let go . In the years since , his teams have performed well though they have been subject to late season collapses. Though blessed with a franchise QB , a stout OL and a superior defense his teams have failed to advance far into the playoffs since the highlight 2007 season. He has had to deal with head cases like Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey and there have been times when I’ve wondered if he had lost control of his team.Perhaps what the team needs at this stage is a strict disciplinarian , a no-nonsense coach like Cowher who will keep the players in check.
If the Giants don’t make it to at least the second round of the playoffs , I think the time has come to cut Coughlin loose, particularly if Bill Cowher is available.Complicating matters is the uncertainty about next season and an impending lockout. Still , for now , all that matters is next Sunday’s game with the Packers. GO GIANTS !!
