Science would have us believe that Time passes at the same unhurried pace all the time . Sixty seconds to a minute, sixty minutes to an hour and so on. But we know different , don’t we? Time passes at different rates depending on our stage of Life. When we are young , the future is limitless and time passes very slowly , particularly on schooldays . The weekends may seem to rush by, espescially when one has not done one’s homework , but even summer vacations seem long. The older one gets, the faster Time passes and , in the later stages , it really seems to gallop.
The Scottish stand-up comedian, Billy Connolly, did a little riff on the subject in a routine that he performed when he turned sixty-two.He expressed his amazement at how fast the years pass saying that, at one moment, he was enjoying his sixtieth birthday party and the next thing he knew he had already turned sixty two. He proceeded to illustrate the passage of a typical year by singing in quick succession one line of Auld Lang Syne , a chorus of Happy Birthday and a snatch of It’s a Jolly, Jolly Christmas ! Isn’t that the truth and haven’t we all had that feeling?
Why is it that Time seems to pass faster as we age ? The standard explanation is that we become more aware of time when the future begins to be shorter than the past. Some years ago, I read another explanation for the phenomenon. I don’t have the exact words but the gist of the explanation was as follows: As we grow older, we settle into a routine and there is little to distinguish one day from another. There are no memorable highs or lows and ,since every day is not dissimilar from the previous one or the next, time seems to telescope into itself and thus appears shorter than it is. I’m not quite sure I buy this explanation but I haven’t heard anything better.
Actually , I find that each year is a microcosm of Life. The months of January and February pass relatively slowly but in March, time begins to move faster. Each succeeding month appears to move faster and faster and the November and December are a blur. ” Does it have anything to do with the weather? ” I wonder . Is it only in the cold weather climes that time appears to move slowly because it is winter or do people in warm climates feel the same way ?
