So… the Steelers have been installed as 7 point favorites and according to the sports pundits the Cardinals need not even bother to show up.The Steel Curtain is going to shut down the Cardinal offense , knock Kurt Warner silly and the Pittsburgh offense is going to do it’s part as the Steelers wallop the Cards.
This could very well happen but then I remember the previous predictions by these same experts. I was out of the country for the first two rounds of the playoffs but I did see the Philly-Arizona game. In the pregame show , all the pundits picked Philly. We know what happened, don’t we ?
Let’s face it, this is a completely different team from the one that played the regular season. Edgerrin James gives them a semblance of a running attack, hopefully enough to keep the Steeler defense from keying on Warner. If Warner gets even a little time , I think he can cause the Steelers problems. The consensus is that Warner has not faced a defense as good as the Steelers. True, but then the Steelers have not gone up against an offense as explosive as the Cards have. I’m hoping that Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner with help from Anquan Boldin are able to give the Cards an early lead just as they did against Philly and that they are then able to make it stand up. If the Steelers get a jump early, it’s going to be all over and … pass the guacamole.
I’m a fool for underdogs , so I’m going to predict….
Arizona 20, Pittsburgh 17
Whoever wins, I’m not going to be bent out of shape.I like both teams. Unlike last year, when I ( and most of the country, except Massachussets) was rooting against the Patriots, this years Super Bowl has no villains for me. Most fans regard Pittsburgh as a good sports town and the Rooneys as the salt of the earth. I was surprised to hear from a friend in Florida, that his neighborhood is almost completely for the Steelers. Apparently, there are Steeler fans in places far removed from Pittsburgh. The collapse of the steel industry in the seventies created a lot of ex-Pittsburghites as people spread to other parts of the country, particularly the South , in search of work. Perhaps this also has something to do with the perception of the Steelers as “lunchpail” guys who play hard, smashmouth football. ” Guys like us “, in other words. I too like the individual players, Roethlisberger and Polamalu and Harrison and Willie Parker ,even Hines Ward, sneaky and vicious though he is.
Bottom line : I hope it’s a good game … and the Cardinals win ( Heh-Heh!)
True story: I was talking to a young friend, a 10th grader, when she asked me ” Do you know who’s playing at the Super Bowl ?”
Me: ” Yes. The Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
She : ” I knew THAT. I meant who’s playing at the halftime show.”
Good to know that she is focussed on what is important and is not distracted by sideshows like the game itself.
Time was when I used to go all out with the Super Bowl meal but now , as Diet Coca Cola becomes the drink of choice in our group and people start having dietary resrictions, it cramps my style. Consequently, I have scaled back on the food quite a bit. Most of it is ready prepared , courtesy of Costco , but overall it should be a pretty good feast. Heavy on the appetizers , no beef or pork, mostly fish , some chicken and veggies.
