I was having breakfast with my wife this morning when she mentioned that ,at the hospital where she works, the oldest patient was a woman aged 102.I said it wasn’t surprising that the patient was a woman rather than a man, since it’s well known that women live longer than men. The discussion took off from there.
Since stress is such a big factor in shortening life spans, she opined that the gap in life expectancy between men and women may be shortening . In the past, most women were married, stay-at-home moms and were not subject to the stresses of earning a living. Nowadays, most American women work outside the home in addition to being primarily responsible for bringing up children and running the household. The large number of single moms has it even worse since they both have to earn a living and bring up the children all by themselves. The theory does seem to make sense but the answers will not be known until this generation greys, thirty or forty years from now.
