In August, I wrote about Karachi, a new Indo-Pak restaurant that had just opened in nearby South Plainfield, just across the border from Edison. I said that the Karachi buffet was great value for the money and that their goat biryani was excellent and could not be improved upon. Unfortunately, the quality of the food at Karachi has deteriorated markedly and I no longer recommend it.
My displeasure with Karachi stems from a tray of Chicken Biryani that I ordered from them. It was an utter and absolute disappointment , nowhere close to the quality that I had experienced with previous orders. There was hardly any flavor, very little chicken, and the rice was not freshly made. I had picked up the biryani for a friend’s party and I was mortified to hear the comments made by the other guests as they tasted the biryani. When a full tray of biryani costs $ 90, one expects that there will be enough chicken so that each guest gets at least one piece ; otherwise , they might as well be eating plain rice. The tray of biryani that I got had a few large pieces that were gone within 3 minutes. At the very least, why not cut the chicken into smaller pieces so that everyone at least gets a taste ? Even more unforgiveable was the lack of spices and the absence of taste. For sure, I will not be ordering biryani from them again.
The daily buffet , at $ 5.99 continues to be good value but here again the quality is not what it is used to be. At the Sunday buffet ( $9.99 per head ) there were many fewer dishes than I had been led to believe. The manager blamed it on the fact that they were busy until 12 midnight the previous night with a large party and that they were working on a large takeout order for a party in Boston. Maybe so, but it was still a disappointment. Friends of ours who have tried the buffet also were of the opinion that it is barely OK, not outstanding. The atmosphere in the restaurant has also been characterised as joyless and depressing . Bottomline : I might go there for the buffet but I will not be ordering biryani from them anytime soon.
