A Convincing Win in Pittsburgh. In their first outing against a quality team the Giants came through with flying colors and , in many ways, this game was reminiscent of their Super Bowl win. For much of the game, the Giant offense was stymied by the Steeler defense but it hung in there .The Giant defense held the Steelers at bay until, finally, the offense clicked and Eli Manning produced some 4th quarter heroics to seal the win. Usually, I am very pessimistic about the outcome of a Giants game but this time , for some reason, I had the feeling that the Giants were going to pull it out. I had no idea HOW it was going to happen but I was confident that it would. And to think that it all started with a failed long snap that resulted in a safety that enabled them to tie the game ! Every part of the Giants team seemed to click ;the defense, the offense, the special teams, the coaching. Even the sub-par performance by Plaxico Burress didn’t seem to matter and I was glad to see Amani Toomer and Kevin Boss come through with clutch catches. Score one for the good guys, the solid citizens. It’s true that the Steelers were missing some key personnel due to injuries and a suspension but hey, that’s the breaks. Now , finally, I feel that the Giants are for real. It is very difficult for any team to win Super Bowls back-to-back but , at the very least, the Giants look like they have a chance to make the playoffs. After that, who knows ?
Dropsico, Plexiglass. Those were among the names that Steeler fans used to call Plaxico Burress when he played for Pittsburgh and , if Burress doen’t clean up his act, we’ll be hearing them at Giants Stadium very soon. Four weeks ago, I’d said in an earlier post that I didn’t expect Plaxico to be a Giant beyond the 2009 season. This was before the news came out about the 40 or 50 times he had been fined for various infractions, before his suspension, before his outburst at the coach and his being fined by the league. Now things seem to have gone from bad to worse with not even the other players making excuses from him. No difference between him and T.O except that T.O is a better receiver and more passionate about winning. How long before the Giants decide that Plaxico’s talent is out weighed by his selfishness , just as it was with Jeremy Shockey ? No surprise that Shockey and Burress were very close when they were both on the Giants.
Brandon Jacobs was not much of a factor in the Steeler game but it would be unfair to read too much into it ; he was going up against one of the best defenses in the NFL and they were keying on him. Some Giant fans are quick to criticize him for being too upright a runner ( thus making it easy for the defense to bring him down) and one who doesn’t have enough breakaway speed to turn the corner. How soon they forget ! Until last week Jacobs was being lauded as a punishing runner who ran over defensemen and one , moreover, who was developing into a devastating blocker. I look for him to bounce back in future games. The one thing I fault Jacobs for is losing his cool and abusing the referees when a decision went against him. He came close to getting a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and it’s a good thing that the Giant bench hustled him away. I do wish though that Coach Coughlin would use Ahmed Bradshaw more ; Bradshaw is too good a runner to use just on special teams and he would provide a nice change of pace.
If the NFC East is not the best division in the NFL I don’t know which is. All the teams are above .500 and many of their losses have come against each other. The Giants should win next week , at home against the Cowboys.I just hope they don’t have a letdown after the victory over the Steelers. It won’t be easy. True, Romo is out and Brad Johnson is no Romo but the Cowboys are always dangerous and Wade Phillips has them playing good defense as witness their win over Tampa Bay. Interesting Monday Night matchup as the Redskins play the Steelers at home. I’m surprised Washington is a slight favorite in that one. Perhaps it’s because the Steelers are banged up ? I think the Steelers have a good chance and I look for them to win this one. The Eagles should coast over the Seahawks.
I don’t like Bill Parcells even a little bit but I’ve got to admit he’s a good coach and a better GM. I thought that much of his success with the Giants was because of Bill Belichick who was underrated until he got out from under Parcells. I don’t like Parcells nasty personna but he has been successful wherever he’s gone… Giants, Patriots, Jets, Cowboys and now the Dolphins. After sinking the Bills, the Dolphins are still in last place in the AFC East but they look like a team on the way up. I’m glad because they looked pathetic the last couple of years. Joey Porter is an inspirational player and Chad Pennington seems to have gotten a new lease on life. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Pennington and the Dolphins finished ahead of the Jets? Could happen.
Guess Cleveland is better than we thought and that their performance against the Giants was not a fluke. They beat a good team in toppling Jacksonville and looked good doing it.
