Aachi’s has gone out of business. There is a new restaurant, CORIANDER, at this location.( January, 2009)
After a lapse of several months, my wife and I went to Aachi’s last Friday and are glad to report that it’s improving and is almost back to it’s original standard. They have a new chef (Felix) , a more energetic wait staff and a new commitment to quality.
There are more dishes at the lunch buffet table and it even looks more inviting. On Friday, there were three appetizers, including onion bhajias, masala peanuts and aloo tikki chaat. The two non-veg curries included a scrumptious chicken vindaloo and a so-so ginger chicken. Vegetarian fare included a potato cauliflower curry, pakoda kuzhambu ( very good), two other curries, parathas, two kinds of rice, sambhar and rasam ( both excellent), raita and the usual array of salads and pickles ; dessert was a rich carrot halva. A sada dosa was also served at the table. Friday being St. Valentine’s Day, we were also served gratis , a heart shaped Valentine treat of pistachio halva ; it was excellent.
The dosa was too crisp and the alu tikki chaat could have done with less lemon but , overall, the food quality was very good. In the past , service has been well meaning but confused; this time it was attentive and made us feel welcome.
The lunch buffet at Moksha is still the best in this area but it is pricey ( $ 13 weekdays, $15 weekends). Aachi’s is not quite in the same class, but at $ 8.95 weekdays, it offers an economical alternative.
Aachi’s Authentic Chettinad/ South Indian Restaurant 128 Talmadge Road, Edison Commerce Center, Edison, NJ 08817. (732) 287-0570/ (732- 287-0597) Closed Mondays.
P.S . I first visited Aachi’s shortly after it opened a year ago. It was very good and I had no hesitation in labelling it as one of the best of the lunch buffets in Edison. Sadly, it went sharply downhill a few months later and I felt I had to bring it to the attention of my readers in a follow-up post. Now, it has come back to almost it’s earlier high standards and I find myself writing yet another post. This will not happen in the future. All restaurants, particularly small ethnic restaurants, have their ups and downs and one can’t keep documenting them all. In future, I will write about a restaurant only once , it being understood that my post is an assessment of the establishment on the day that I visited it.
