I hadn’t really wanted to watch ” Crash”. The story line didn’t sound like something I’d like but a couple of friends recommended it highly ; a”must watch” film they said . Besides, it had gotten an Oscar and I’ve always liked Sandra Bullock. So I rented the video and started to watch it.
I started but I never finished. What a downer. After the initial crash scene and homicide, it was one ugly incident after another. A couple of black youths , one of them constantly spouting off about racism, carjack a SUV. Later that night , two white policemen pull over a SUV in a traffic stop and humiliate the black husband and wife in it, the older cop, a racist running his hands all over the woman on the pretext of frisking her. The younger cop, when he gets back to the station, complains about his partner and wants a change but the black sergeant refuses the request; he doesn’t want to buck the system. The white couple who were carjacked go back home and change the locks but the woman goes ballistic when she notices the locksmith is a young shaven headed Latino in loose fitting clothes. In the hearing of the latter, she demands that her husband have the locks changed again in the morning because she is afraid that the locksmith might make a copy of the new keys for his homies. A Middle Eastern shopkeeper trying to buy a gun gets into a shouting match with the gunshop ownerand is ordered off the premises but his daughter placates the latter and manages to completes the buy. The carjackers run over a Chinese man …..at that point, I called it quits.
What is the point of such a movie ? Is it an ‘indictment’ of the society we live in ? If so, that is unfair because it is an one-sided depiction. Is the movie trying to ‘raise my connsciousness ‘ ? Well, no need for that, thank you. I watch movies because I want to be entertained . Whatever ‘ Crash’ is , it is not entertainment. After watching a part of it, I felt terrible, not uplifted or entertained.
Call me an escapist if you will but I’d rather watch ‘Spiderman 3’ or ‘ Pirates of the Caribbean ” any day. Harry Potter, where are you ?
