Two weeks ago, a young acquaintance of mine was complaining that it was too cold. Last week , she complained that it was s-o-o-o hot. Her attitude is not uncommon ; many of us are unhappy unless the temperature is just perfect. As someone has said ‘ Animals adapt themselves to changes in the environment. Man is the only animal that changes the environment to suit his needs.”
It is amazing how quickly it warms up in New Jersey during the latter half of May . On May 15th it is still pleasant as the daytime temperature hovers in the sixties and low seventies. Occasional showers also keep the temperature down. Then the temperature gradually begins to inch up into the eighties and the nights are not cool any more. One day last week it soared into the nineties and I heard my neighbor’s AC unit kick in.
At our house , we try not to turn on the AC until the first of June. If the weather is swelteringly hot and /or we have guests staying with us we give in and turn the AC on earlier but we do so reluctantly. Otherwise, we turn on the ceiling fans and stick it out till the end of May. It reminds us of times and places when we didn’t have the luxury of air-conditioning and it makes us better inured to the local conditions when we travel .
It also makes us appreciate AC more when we do have it. Once we were driving to Florida and stopped for the night in Asheville, North Carolina. It had been a very hot, humid day and we were a little grumpy by the time we checked into our motel room. We opened the door to our room and, (the AC must have been turned on high), a blast of cold air washed over us. It was like taking a dip in the pool. We just lay in bed and reveled in the cold, dinner temporarily forgotten.
Yes, sometimes it’s good to do without.
