Conventional wisdom has held that women are attracted to rich, goodlooking men. Perhaps so, but recent research seems to indicate that women steer clear of successful , handsome men when it comes to choosing a life partner. Instead, they are drawn to less successful men who are more likely to be faithful and will be able to spend time raising children.
This surprising conclusion emerged during psychological tests conducted by Simon Chu and his team of researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in Britain. To evaluate the influence of a man’s status on his marriage potential, they created fictional personal ads, accompanied by photos of men and information about their careers , assigning them high status jobs ( company directors), medium status( teachers) or low status ( waiters). The ads were shown to women who were asked to rank them according to their appeal as a long -term partner.Betterlooking men fared better than uglier ones but, surprisingly, the most successfiul and handsome men did not come out on top.Instead, women ranked them with the poorest men, preferring men with more modest jobs.
In an article in the journal, Personality and Individual Differences, the researchers conclude that ” Given a choice between the attractive males, there does appear to be a rather subtle preference on the part of the females for males of a lesser status and likelihood of infidelity or desertion.” Another reason , they add, is that ” having a partner who is able to spend time raising children is clearly an advantage.”
So there you have it. Are women being realistic in making such a choice ? Or are they being too cynical ? Personally, I think it is the former.
